Montblanc. Hits 'sweet spot' with Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum
Feb 03, 2015,04:38 AM
From this selection of world timer shortlisted, the Montblanc Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum hits the sweet spot of quality features vs price. That was their changeover mission statement 2 years ago and they have achieved it. People used to say to me, "if I was to spend $300k on a watch, it would not be one with 'Montblanc' on the dial.......but I really like the Minerva...oops...Villeret."
When one is travelling in real life, the key requirement is function rather than fancy show off features. The watch has to be legible, precise and robust.
I can see the kudos that could be achieved with the Vacheron Constantin world timer in a fancy wine bar or pub showing off to your client or colleague but I could not use it in real life. Too cluttered and indulgent. Besides, the extra half-hour or quarter-hour time zones are anachronistic sops to political despots. Get with the global program already, for crying out loud!
The Patek Philippe world timer is nice but a different price league and not a large market audience.
The Girard-Perregaux world timer is closest competition to the Montblanc and also a good recommendation for new collectors.
Now, if only I travelled as much as I used to when 'rich and famous'. Now, I just watch TV travel documentaries.
