See the comment below. The vertical coupling used in the Montblanc Rieussec employs a vertical disk clutch which is different than the usual vertical clutch mechanism. Eventhough the overall concept is the same, the implementation is different. I have never seen the movement of the EWC nor Squadra exposed nor a schematic so I really cannot compare the two in this regard.
You are right that JLC has comparable products and I hate talking about absolute prices but let's just say the list price of the JLC EWC is more than 1.5 times Montblanc's offering. The JLC Squadra Chronograph GMT is about 1.2 times...and the MB Rieussic works much better as a travel watch than the Squadra with the larger/easier to read and adjust GMT hand and day/night indicator.
The biggest difference between the Montblanc and the JLC products you've mentionned is that the Montblanc is a monopusher chronograph. Both the Squadra and EWC are dual button chronographs. The dual-buttons allow for the use of a cam, a coulisse, to organize the sequence of the various chronograph operations. A coulisse operates by being pushed back and forth, while a column wheel always turns in one direction, and therefore can only be operated by a single button. I know there is a column wheel exposed on the JLC Caliber 754 but because of the dual buttons I'm not sure exactly how the sequence is controlled via the two actuators.
They are all wonderful watches: JLC, GO, IWC...Montblanc just entered the scene with a good timepiece attractively priced to compete and compete well in my opinion.
